"Perre claimed you. It's what we do to let other's know our intentions towards the woman we plan to... wed," I said hesitantly, trying to judge her reaction.

She seemed to be taking it all in quite well, almost like she'd already guessed as much, but wanted to be sure.

"You mean we aren't technically married yet though? He just put the Cardanian equivalent to a 'do not touch, property of Perre' sign on me. Like calling dibs..." she said trailing off, her tone of voice indicating she didn't like her own particular train of thought very much.

"No. It's more like an engagement ring, a vow of his intentions, if you will," I rushed in to assure her.

God damn it Perre! You really mucked everything up this time brother!

"Can I say no?" she asked gnawing on her bottom lip, looking at me hopefully.

"Uh... I guess you could... but it would be kind of hard... Cardanian's only mate once and when we do, it's for life," I said wincing as she shouted out at my announcement, her eyes wide with disbelief.

"What?!" she fairly shouted again, jumping up on the bed in shock.

I nodded and gave her the rest.

Might as well, she's already come this far and hasn't fallen apart yet, running and screaming from the room.

The episode with Perre was different, I promised myself.

It doesn't count.

"Since he's already mated you, he can't have children with anyone else either," I admitted, clearing my throat nervously as her mouth began to gape open and closed wordlessly, her face going pale in her already porcelain complexion.

She was starting to look a little green around the gills, so I scooped her up and placed her towel wrapped body in my lap, hugging her tight to try and comfort her.

"What am I going to do," she whispered, her voice cracking, my heart aching for her at her desolate tone. It seemed to almost echo, sounding stark in the quiet of the room.

"He doesn't even like me..."

"Perre likes you my maiden fair, or he wouldn't have mated with you, wouldn't have committed himself to you in such a way. I know everything is really sudden and it's a lot to take in, but he's not really like that, not usually. We had a bad experience with another woman not too long ago. It's not you, it's him. He has issues with what the woman did and he's having trouble getting over it. He fucked up, everyone fucks up sometimes right?" I cajoled, explaining Perre to her to ease her pain, hoping she’d believe me when I tell her it really is him and nothing she did.

Explaining him to her so she knows it's his shit not hers. His problems, not a problem of hers or with her.

I'll deal with that Asshole later I thought, growling in my mind.

Nobody calls my goddess a whore or makes her feel ashamed for no fucking reason!

But for now, I'll play middle man and try to mend what little bit I can, for Mags’ sake.
